A two-day international science forum is to take place at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi on May 8-9 as part of the events marking the 15th Anniversary of the ascension of His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to the Golden Stool.

The Otumfuo International Science Forum has been mooted by His Majesty and is being organised in collaboration with the University and all of Ghana's mainstream scientific institutions--the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Ghana Medical Association, Ghana Institution of Engineers as well as a number of eminent Ghanaian scientists in the diaspora.

According to Mr. Kofi Badu, Chief of Staff at Manhyia Palace, in line with his commitment to education and national development, Otumfuo had decided to use the 15th Anniversary to focus national attention on the need to advance the course of science in the pursuit of national development. Towards this end, he had mooted the forum which aims to bring home a number of eminent Ghanaian-born scientists in the diaspora, some eminent international scientists to join all home-based scientists to share their experiences and insights and brainstorm on how science may stimulate the creativity and innovation of Ghanaians and propel the nation's development effort forward.

To make the Forum more meaningful, policy makers from both the executive and legislative arms of government and the key business leaders from finance, industry, commerce, energy and mining have been invited to create an interface between science and business.

Mr. Badu noted that the theme for the Anniversary was: "rekindling the spirit of creativity, innovation and enterprise through traditional leadership" and drawing from that, the scientists organising the Forum had chosen the theme: "promoting creativity and innovation through science, technology and enterprise"

A number of both Ghanaian and international scientists have accepted invitations to participate. Locally, Ghanaians in all fields of scientific and creative endeavour are expected to take part.

An exhibition will run parallel to the Forum which is expected to showcase Ghanaian efforts and achievements in scientific endeavour as well as the global opportunities available for Ghanaians to tap into.

A Planning Committee for the Forum comprising representatives of all the collaborating institutions has been set up. The committee is chaired by Prof. S.I.K. Ampadu, Provost of the College of Engineering, KNUST and representative of the Ghana Institution of Engineers.
